Occupational Factors Affecting the Safe Reopening of the Economy
A Data-Driven Framework to help minimize the “reopening risk”
Researchers at the Rochester Data Science Consortium have written a white paper that outlines a data-driven approach to safely reopening business, identifying factors that mitigate the risk of COVID-19 transmission. The paper focuses on two mechanisms:
- Identifying classes of employees in occupations that can perform their work tasks from home
- Identifying classes of occupations that are most at risk of COVID-19 transmission
Drawing upon U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Occupational Information Network (O*NET) surveys, RDSC researchers identified and ranked occupations and industries on the degree to which their work environment is (1) conducive to teleworking, and (2) presents large risks of COVID-19 transmission. This information will enable higher confidence in mitigation and remote work strategies for most types of businesses and provides a basis for a staged reopening.
